WEEKEND PASTORAL LETTER 6 September 2020
Dear Brethren,
MEDITATION
To Titus, a true son in our common faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Titus 1:4
OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION
1. Recipient of this Pastoral Letter
2. Titus
a) He is well-described
b) He is a true son
c) He is addressed in the same way as Timothy (1 Timothy 1:2)
3. Our common faith
a) The word “common” was added in this text
b) It is the same faith that Paul shared with Timothy (and all believers)
4. Greetings
a) Grace
i) A major word in Paul’s theology
ii) A major word in his life as well
b) Mercy
i) Another major word in Paul’s vocabulary
ii) This word is closely tied to the word “grace”
iii) They function together very closely
iv) This word is a greatly used word in the Old Testament
c) Peace
i) It is a blessing
ii) It is a result of grace and mercy of God given to us
We have peace with God (Romans 5:1)
iii) Peace is also practical and personal
iv) Peace also affects our heart and mind
5. The Source of these blessings
a) From God the Father
b) And the Lord Jesus Christ who is our Saviour
It is through this salvation that we experience all three blessings!
APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY
1. Grace, Mercy and Peace
a) These are as vital to us as it was to Paul and Titus
b) These are blessings that we often take for granted
2. Good to be conscious of these blessings in our life and ministry
a) Every blessing we have may be traced to grace and mercy
b) May we have a heightened consciousness of these blessings!
OUR CHALLENGE
1. Let us seek to help our church members to be conscious of these blessings too
2. Let us personally exercise personal gratitude for the grace and mercy of God in our life
3. The peace of God is to be even more appreciated as we face Covid-19
Prayerfully,
Pastor Charles Tan
