The role of the signs Jesus performed
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book, but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31)
SIGNS JESUS PERFORMED ACCORDING TO THE GOSPEL OF JOHN
- The Changing of water into wine at Canaan (John 2:1-11)
- The cleansing of the temple (John 2:18)
- The healing of the royal official’s son in Capernaum (John 4:46-54)
- The healing of the paralytic at Bethesda (John 5:1-15)
- The feeding of the 5000 (John 6:5-14)
- Jesus walking on water (John 6:16-24)
- The healing of the man born blind (John 9:1-7)
- The raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45)
- The resurrection of the Lord Jesus (John 20:26-29)
- The miraculous catch of fish (John 21:1-14)
SIGNS THAT ARE NOT WRITTEN IN THIS BOOK
- Signs that are recorded only in the Synoptic Gospels
- Signs that are not recorded in any of the four Gospels
- There must have been many signs Jesus did in front of His disciples
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE TEN SIGNS OF JESUS JOHN PAINSTAKINGLY RECORDED
- They are selected for a special purpose
- They are meant to aid one to believe in
- Jesus as the Christ (the Messiah)
- Jesus as the Son of God
- That which was written is to help us (readers of the Gospel)
- To come to faith in Jesus
- To have life in Jesus
Life in his name
- This ‘life in his name’ is a reference to the life Jesus has come to grant
- The eternal life
- The abundant life (John 10:10)
- The very life of Jesus in us (1John 1:2)
- Let us not presume that we will find this life in the Holy writ.
- Let us never be persuaded that this life is confined to Christianity as a religion
- Let us always be challenged to know Jesus Christ better and clearer
May we always be confident that only Jesus gives humanity life in the fullest sense of the word!
