As the Scriptures say…(39)
The suffering foreordained
So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?” (John 18:11)
Jesus as a Man goes through sufferings so as to secure our places in the presence of God. The ultimate suffering He undergoes is none other than the crucifixion. It is of enlightenment to take note of how Jesus Himself approaches the cup of suffering.
So Jesus said to Peter…
- The event took place in a garden (called “Gethsemane” in Matt 26:36, Mark 14:32) in Kidron Valley
- The Kidron Valley was located between the temple mount on the east of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives further to the east
- A band of soldiers and religious leaders led by Judas came to the garden to arrest Jesus there (John 18:3)
- As they attempted to arrest Jesus, Peter struck Malchus’ right ear with his sword (John 18:10)
- It was after this moment that Jesus immediately told Peter to put his sword into its sheath.
WHAT WAS PETER ACTUALLY DOING?
- Humanly speaking, he was protecting his Master from harm and arrest
- What he did was self-defense, so to speak.
- What he did was also just and even necessary
- Spiritually speaking, he was hindering Jesus from fulfilling His mission
- This is what Peter should never attempt
Shall I not drink the cup
- The cup is a reference to the suffering foreordained
- Jesus as the Messiah of God would also be the Suffering Servant of Yahweh (Isa. 53)
- It was the will of God that Jesus suffered the death of the Cross
- It was God’s will that Jesus Himself gave in as detected in his prayers (Matt.26)
That the Father gave me?
- The Father gave Jesus a number of things
- The authority (John 17:2); b. The work (John 17:4); c. The people
(John 17:6); d. The word (John 17:8)
- This cup (of suffering) too is that which the Father gave Jesus
- Jesus is to take up the cup
- Jesus is to drink the cup
- Nothing, including someone’s genuine and great love for Jesus, should come close to prevent Him (Jesus) from obeying His Father
