As the Scriptures say…(34)
The Spirit of Truth
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you in all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you (John 16:13-14)
The holy Spirit is clearly identified as the Spirit of truth. In being so, he is indeed another one of the same kind with Jesus who is the truth. This is also how the Spirit of God will manifest himself to and in us.
Who the Spirit of God is
- He is the Spirit of truth (See also, John 14:17)
- He is another Helper (“allos parakletos” in John 14:16, 26, 16:7)
- He is the anointing (“Chrisma” in 1 John 2:27)
What the Spirit of God does
- He dwells in us (John 14:17)
- He causes us to remember whatever Jesus has taught (John 14:26)
- He teaches us all things (John 14:26, 1John 2:27)
- He convicts the world (and us) of sin (John 16:8)
- He convinces us about God’s righteousness (John 16:8)
- He metes out judgment upon Satan (John 16:8, 2 Cor. 4:4)
- He guides us into all truth (John 16:13)
- He speaks to us expressly/clearly (John 16:13 Cf. 1 Timothy 4)
- He declares to us the things to come (John 16:13)
- He glorifies Jesus (John 16:14)
How the Spirit of God manifests
- He is just like Jesus
- In teaching the Scriptures
- In guiding us into all truth
- In helping us to cope with ups and downs of life
- He promotes Jesus
- By testifying of Jesus
- By glorifying Jesus
- By declaring of whatever is of Jesus
- By bringing back to remembrance whatever Jesus has taught
- The ministry of the Spirit is analogous to that of the Lord Jesus
- Jesus as the truth is the criterion of the Spirit
- The teaching of Jesus is the landmark of the Spirit
No wonder, he is known as “the Spirit of Christ” (Romans 8:9, Gal.4:6, 1 Pet. 1:11) in every sense of the word!
